Eleven-year-old Anna’s elder sister is killed by a mysterious fall from her beautiful black Frisian horse, Zafir. Following the accident Anna’s life becomes very isolated. Her parents are very worried by her powerful attachment to Zafir, of all horses. Since her sister’s death nobody has ridden the horse, and so Zafir has grown wild and restless, and now nobody dares to ride him at all. Mysterious Sharbat, who comes to see Zafir at night, is quickly condemned as a horse thief by everyone else, but Sharbat has acquired the ability to tame the big, black horse. Anna finds out, and the two team up on a mission: Sharbat will teach Anna how to ride Zafir before the big race. The mission will have to be carried out at night, as nobody must discover that Anna has been riding Zafir. The tension mounts when Anna’s father declares that Zafir is to be sold on the very morning of the race. |
