Life is not easy for 11-year-old Allan in the southern Denmark of the 1960s. His mother has abandoned hope, his sister has suffered a breakdown, and his older brother has left home. As no one else can cope, Allan himself takes on the responsibility of keeping together a family plagued by incest and dominated by the tyranny of a self-pitying father. Everyone is happiest when dad is happy. But with the family’s village shop on the verge of bankruptcy, and the revelation that the father seeks consolation with his own daughter, life is not easy. |
