“Gambler” is an entertaining documentary about film director Nicolas Winding Refn’s struggle to clear himself of a personal debt of DKK 5.5 million – to secure his family financially and help him get on with his life. Nicolas Winding Refn, noted for his debut cult movie “Pusher” from 1996, was forced to file for personal bankruptcy when “Fear X” became a box-office flop which left him DKK 5.5 million in the red. His only chance to wipe the slate clean and continue his career as filmmaker was to produce “Pusher 2” and “Pusher 3”. “Gambler” humorously portrays his ambitious project where there is no time for writer’s block and where deadlines are to be met if money is to keep rolling in. The main character is haunted by a feeling of having sold out artistically by trying cash in on sequels, yet he needs to deliver in order to persuade the film consultants (i.e. the Danish Film Institute) to grant him public money for his two films. While shooting on location in the Copenhagen underworld he plays along with his financial advisors and accountants, whose jargon he doesn’t quite understand, in order to extend his credit. And all along he must take care of his wife and newborn baby. |
